The key question
Alcohol is not an age-appropriate drink for a child, and adult drink-count conventions are not pediatric safety thresholds. Mixed drinks may look or taste like ordinary juice, making supervision and storage important. NIAAA explains that dangerous intoxication depends on several factors and can affect consciousness and breathing. If a child may have swallowed alcohol, seek local poison or emergency advice rather than applying an adult calculation or waiting for the child to appear drunk. [1] [2]
The beverage name is not the exposure
Beer, wine, and spirits all deliver ethanol. Effects depend on the amount and pattern of drinking as well as individual circumstances. A serving poured at home or in a restaurant may not match a standard drink. Acute impairment and longer-term health effects are different questions; feeling less intoxicated does not show that an exposure is harmless. Public information cannot calculate a safe amount for an individual, especially during pregnancy or with interacting medicines. [3]

Putting it into practice
Keep drinks inaccessible to children and obtain prompt professional advice after suspected ingestion. [1] [2]
Risk varies by exposure and individual circumstances; population findings cannot predict one person’s outcome. [3]
Evidence summary
Established findings
Uncertainty
- Risk varies by exposure and individual circumstances; population findings cannot predict one person’s outcome. [3]
Observational associations
- Association alone cannot establish causation. Consider the studied population, other exposures, and whether a finding comes from observation or a controlled comparison.
